Operational playbook for effective emissions reduction for international humanitarian organisations

1

In recent years, both climate scientists and leading figures, such as the UN Secretary General and the US Secretary of Defence, have described climate change as an existential threat to humanity.

Effective emissions reduction refers to targeted approaches that aim to minimise the GHG emissions produced by an organisation or a sector with a view to reaching the Paris Agreement goal of halving GHG emissions by 2030. A quantified approach uses quantitative targets, implementation plans, and monitoring and reporting frameworks. It ensures that all emissions – whether direct or indirect – are accounted for and does not include offsetting in carbon accounting.

In 2023 and 2024, Climate Action Accelerator launched a pilot project with Sahelian NGOs exploring ways to develop more resilient, low- carbon and sustainable operational procedures. Lessons from this initial pilot will be available in an upcoming playbook for local organisations, to be released in early 2025.
